South Korea Bank Data Breaches Put Financial Sector Cybersecurity on Alert

South Korea bank data breaches have prompted President Lee Jae Myung to order a comprehensive investigation following hacking attacks that exposed customer information at major financial institutions.
Shinhan Bank said personal information belonging to around 25,000 customers was leaked, including names, telephone numbers and annual income.
Hana Bank reported a separate breach affecting 89 customers, while Woori Bank and NH Nonghyup Bank experienced hacking attempts but prevented unauthorised access.
Financial regulators said they had so far found no evidence that sensitive information capable of enabling unauthorised payments had been compromised.
However, authorities warned that exposed personal information could potentially be exploited for voice phishing and other financial scams.
The incidents have also raised concerns about increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks and the potential use of advanced artificial intelligence tools by attackers, increasing pressure on banks and regulators to strengthen cybersecurity and customer-data protections.
