SGX crypto perpetual futures could soon become available to US institutional investors as Singapore Exchange expands its push into regulated cryptocurrency derivatives.

SGX has filed with the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission to offer its Bitcoin and Ether perpetual futures to American institutions, Bloomberg reported.

The contracts could become available if the regulator raises no objection within 10 days.

SGX launched the products in November and has since recorded around USD6bn in turnover.

In August, the exchange handled 29,655 Bitcoin perpetual contracts and 6,758 Ether contracts, bringing the eight-month total to 353,825.

Unlike cryptocurrency markets that operate continuously, SGX’s contracts trade for 22.5 hours a day, five days a week.

The expansion comes as US platforms including Coinbase increase their presence in perpetual futures, intensifying competition for institutional investors seeking exposure to cryptocurrency derivatives.
