Private Credit Fund Liquidity Faces Test as Investors Seek Withdrawals

Private credit fund liquidity is facing increased scrutiny after several major asset managers restricted investor withdrawals following a surge in redemption requests.
Apollo Global Management limited withdrawals from its USD26bn Apollo Debt Solutions vehicle to 5% after redemption requests reached almost 17%, or USD2.4bn.
Ares Management also capped withdrawals from its USD23bn Strategic Income Fund after requests reached 14.4%.
BlackRock, Blackstone and Blue Owl have similarly restricted withdrawals from private credit vehicles following elevated redemption demand.
The developments come amid bankruptcies involving US private credit borrowers, concerns about technology companies vulnerable to disruption from artificial intelligence and broader questions about liquidity within the rapidly expanding asset class.
The withdrawal restrictions are highlighting the mismatch that can emerge when investors seek frequent access to capital held in underlying loans and other assets that cannot necessarily be sold quickly.
