The Maybank tokenised supply-chain financing transaction marks Malaysia's first such deal and demonstrates how tokenisation could improve access to working capital and trade finance.
Maybank provided MYR1m (USD237,000) in financing to construction and building materials supplier Syarikat Logam Unitrade through Virtual Economy Technology's NexA platform for tokenised trade receivables.
Operating through the Securities Commission's regulatory sandbox, the pilot demonstrated an end-to-end tokenised process covering invoice approval, financing disbursement and settlement within a live commercial environment.
Maybank said the technology could improve transparency, traceability and transaction speed while giving buyers and suppliers, particularly micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, faster access to working capital.
The bank believes tokenisation could eventually facilitate deep-tier supply-chain financing, extending funding beyond immediate suppliers further into commercial networks.
The technology could also support more seamless cross-border trade financing across ASEAN as digital financial infrastructure develops throughout the region.
