Hong Kong Indonesia Cross-Border Payments Move Closer Under QR Code Agreement

Hong Kong Indonesia cross-border payments could become faster and cheaper under an agreement between the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and Bank Indonesia to explore interoperability between their QR code-based payment systems.
The two authorities signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening cooperation on cross-border payments as digital payment adoption continues to expand across Asia.
Under the agreement, the HKMA and Bank Indonesia will hold discussions covering technical, operational and regulatory issues associated with linking their respective QR payment systems.
The authorities said the initiative is intended to support faster, cheaper, more transparent and inclusive cross-border transactions.
Greater interoperability could also strengthen financial connectivity between Hong Kong and Indonesia and make payments more convenient for businesses and consumers operating between the two markets.
No implementation date for interoperable QR code payments was announced, with the MoU establishing the framework for further discussions rather than an immediate payment link.
