Hong Kong Banking Talent Gap Emerges in AI and Green Finance

A new study has highlighted a Hong Kong banking talent gap in artificial intelligence, green finance, and regional expertise, posing challenges for the city’s financial hub over the next five years. The survey, conducted by the HKMA, the Hong Kong Association of Banks, and the Hong Kong Institute of Bankers across 147 banks in Q1 2025, found that the sector should prioritise upskilling to address shortages rather than relying on higher pay. While 57% of banks remained optimistic about the outlook to 2030, 11% flagged geopolitical tensions as potential risks. The report stressed that closing the Hong Kong banking talent gap is essential for maintaining the city’s global competitiveness.
