The HKEX multi-asset expansion strategy will broaden Hong Kong's financial market beyond equities, with the exchange also considering longer trading hours to increase its appeal to international investors.

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing CEO Bonnie Chan said the exchange intends to sharpen its focus on fixed income, currencies, commodities and other asset classes as it develops a more diversified market ecosystem.

HKEX will also continue broadening its listing pipeline beyond hard technology companies into sectors including biotechnology, healthcare, mining and consumer businesses.

Potential homecoming listings and multinational companies are also in the pipeline.

The exchange is examining whether longer cash-market trading hours could provide greater overlap with US markets, although no timetable has been established.

Hong Kong's derivatives market already trades until 3 a.m.

Chan said extending cash-market hours requires closer consideration because trading practices and requirements differ among investors.

The initiative forms part of HKEX's broader effort to attract international capital while expanding Hong Kong's range of investible products.
