Family offices are increasingly adopting formal wealth-purpose frameworks as they prepare for one of the largest intergenerational wealth transfers in history, according to preliminary findings from the 2026 AlTi Tiedemann Global and Campden Wealth Family Office Operational Excellence Report.

The family office wealth purpose trend reflects a growing focus on governance, succession and preserving family values alongside financial capital.

The survey of 126 family office principals and executives found that 48% had established a clearly defined purpose for family wealth, up from around one-third a year earlier.

Preparing the next generation to manage inherited assets was the most frequently cited motivation, identified by 65% of respondents.

Other important objectives included giving wealth greater meaning, strengthening family cohesion and reducing future conflicts.

Despite the increased emphasis on governance, only 17% said younger family members were highly engaged in defining the family's long-term purpose, highlighting a continuing gap between succession planning and next-generation participation.

The findings suggest that family office wealth purpose frameworks are becoming an increasingly important element of long-term family governance and wealth preservation.
