Family Business Succession Should Separate Ownership and Leadership, Says UOB

Family business succession should focus on developing capable stewards rather than automatically transferring management control to an heir, according to Angela Koh, UOB Private Bank's head of wealth planning and family office advisory services.
Koh said future leaders need sound judgement, emotional maturity, resilience and a commitment to preserve and grow family capital.
Families can reduce conflict by separating ownership from management and creating clear governance structures.
She recommended establishing family councils to address succession, values and ownership matters while leaving company boards responsible for commercial and operational decisions.
Younger family members should also be given opportunities to test ideas outside the core business, allowing innovation and diversification without exposing the family enterprise's balance sheet to unnecessary risk.
The approach reflects growing recognition that successful succession requires governance, leadership development and clearly defined responsibilities rather than relying solely on inheritance or family seniority.
