Wealthy Donor Potential Places Hong Kong Third Globally for Philanthropy

Hong Kong philanthropy hub credentials have been strengthened after the city ranked third globally for its potential to attract charitable giving from wealthy individuals, according to research by wealth intelligence firm Altrata.
Hong Kong placed behind New York and Seoul in Altrata’s inaugural Giving Opportunity Index, which assessed 100 cities worldwide.
The index evaluates cities based on concentrations of wealth, donor affinity and the strength of philanthropic infrastructure.
Altrata defined wealthy individuals as those with net worth exceeding USD5m, while donors were individuals who contributed at least USD1,000 to charitable organisations between 2015 and 2025.
The ranking measures the potential for philanthropic contributions over the medium term rather than simply comparing historical donation volumes.
For family offices and wealth advisers, the findings highlight Hong Kong’s position as a centre for philanthropic planning and charitable activities among wealthy families.
The study also underscores the importance of established giving networks and philanthropic infrastructure in supporting future donations.
