US remains Taiwan banking sector's largest debtor

Taiwanese banks have recorded a record-high exposure to the US market at the end of December 2022, marking the 30th consecutive quarter that the US has been the largest debtor nation to Taiwan’s banking sector, according to data compiled by the central bank. The total claims by Taiwan's banking sector to the US reached USD139.36bn, an increase of 3.35% from the end of September. The rise in investment from Taiwan was due to the US Federal Reserve’s aggressive rate hike cycle to boost US Treasuries and bond yields, making investment instruments more attractive. Outstanding international claims for the banking sector totalled USD522.8bn at the end of December, a 2% increase from the previous quarter, driven by growth of lending to non-bank private institutions and the public sector.
