ByteDance-owned TikTok plans to invest billions in Southeast Asia in the coming years, despite ongoing global scrutiny over data security, according to a Reuters reporter, citing CEO Shou Zi Chew. The region, half of whose 630 million residents are under 30, is one of TikTok's biggest user markets. The app aims to translate its significant user base into an e-commerce revenue stream, despite strong competition from major rivals like Shopee, Lazada, and Tokopedia. Chew mentioned that TikTok's content is becoming more diversified as the platform expands beyond advertising into e-commerce. TikTok currently employs 8,000 people in Southeast Asia and hosts 2 million small vendors on its platform in Indonesia, the region's largest economy.
