Taiwan insurers see 126% sales growth in Covid-19 cover

Insurance companies in Taiwan have reported a 126% growth in sales of COVID-19 insurance policies in the first 17 days of January. According to data from the Financial Supervisory Commission, Insurance firms in Taiwan managed to sign up 2,500 policies on average per day amid a rising number of local COVID-19 cases. From January 1 to January 17, insurance firms in Taiwan sold 42,376 policies that cover COVID-19 related losses, with combined premiums of up to NTD34.6m (USD1.25m). For the entire 2021, about 12.75 million policies were sold, with premiums amounting to NTD8.1bn, the data showed. The FSC said it would monitor insurance companies to make sure that the pay-outs they promise in their policies are met.
