Taiwan's financial sector is set for further consolidation after the Financial Supervisory Commission approved two significant transactions involving banking and insurance groups.

The approvals cover the merger of Bank SinoPac and King's Town Bank, together with E.Sun Financial Holding's acquisition of Mercuries Life Insurance.

Bank SinoPac will become the surviving entity when the merger takes effect on 1 January next year, creating a lender with 189 branches, the second-largest domestic branch network in Taiwan.

The enlarged institution will rank 12th by deposit and loan market share while operating the country's seventh-largest ATM network with 710 machines.

Separately, E.Sun Financial will acquire 100% of Mercuries Life through a share swap, with completion provisionally scheduled for 1 September.

E.Sun has committed to retaining all 10,304 Mercuries employees for three years following the acquisition.

The Taiwan financial sector transactions highlight continued consolidation among financial institutions seeking greater scale and operational efficiency.
