Malaysia, China strengthen ties as US tariffs loom

Updated: Apr 24

China and Malaysia signed 31 preliminary cooperation agreements during President Xi Jinping’s state visit, underscoring Beijing’s bid to strengthen regional ties amid US trade tensions. The deals span artificial intelligence, mutual visa exemptions, railway development, and global security. Xi met Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya on Wednesday, with both leaders emphasising shared goals in trade, technology, and prosperity. Xi’s visit marks his second stop in Southeast Asia as China counters US pressure and reinforces partnerships with export-driven economies. The leaders also discussed progress on key projects, including the East Coast Rail Link. Malaysia, impacted by new US tariffs, is seeking trade relief and closer ties with China to mitigate risks. Xi also met with King Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar earlier in the day.
