Koo Yun-cheol has taken office as South Korea’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, ending a three-month leadership gap. He now leads efforts on US tariff negotiations, tax reforms, and AI-driven economic strategies.
Koo’s first assignment includes a trip to Washington to address tariffs on automobiles, steel, and aluminium, while pushing for broader market access. Domestically, he is preparing a major tax overhaul that could reverse corporate tax cuts and reintroduce capital gains and securities transaction taxes.
Koo also plans to establish a dedicated AI division within the finance ministry as part of a broader strategy to restructure South Korea’s economy through technological innovation.
