Asian family office hedge funds allocations are attracting growing interest as wealthy families and institutional investors seek protection against volatility in equity and debt markets.

Global hedge fund assets increased by a record USD409bn during the second quarter of 2026 to USD5.6tr, according to Hedge Fund Research figures cited by Reuters.

Swiss private bank UBP said hedge-fund-only mandates among its Asia-based discretionary portfolio clients had more than tripled since the end of 2024.

Indonesia’s Danantara Investment Management is targeting a 5% allocation to hedge funds, while some institutional investors are considering exposures of approximately 10%, according to adviser Marsh.

Investors are increasingly exploring multi-strategy, macro and quantitative investment managers to diversify portfolios beyond conventional stocks and bonds.

The trend reflects concerns about geopolitical divisions, market volatility and concentration risks associated with artificial intelligence investments, encouraging wealthy families to consider alternative strategies for managing portfolio risk.
