Free trade agreement between the Philippines and the US unlikely this year

The American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (AmCham) believes a free trade agreement (FTA) between the Philippines and the US is unlikely before the midterm elections of the US Congress in November. AmCham Executive Director Ebb Hinchliffe said that US President Joe Biden has other things to contend with and may lose control of the congress. Concerns over China and trade with China more are more likely to be pressing than a trade agreement with the Philippines. Hinchliffe added that an FTA might negatively impact the outcome of the election for the Democrats, and they might have some problems with getting the buy-in of US labour unions as well.
