Early MPF claims drop to USD8bn in 2022

The number of claims by members of the Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) leaving Hong Kong fell by 11% to HKD8.02bn in 2022 from a year prior. For the last quarter of 2022, the number of claims dropped by 19.5% yearly to 7,000, the lowest quarterly figure last year. The claimed amount shrank 28% year-on-year to HKD1.72bn, also the lowest among the four quarters. The MPF Authority said that the scheme members claiming permanent departure may not be emigrants, as some of them could be returning to their places of origin or move to reside in the Chinese mainland. The MPF reported a positive return of 6.1% in January and the total amount of the fund assets rallied further to over HKD1.12bn as the stock market jumped 10.4% in the same month.
