China has defended the BRICS bloc as a cooperative platform after former US President Donald Trump vowed to impose 10% tariffs on countries aligned with the group. Trump accused BRICS of “anti-Americanism” after its summit in Rio de Janeiro criticised US trade policies.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning rejected the notion of confrontation, reiterating China’s opposition to protectionism and trade wars. BRICS—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and others—has increasingly been viewed as a counterweight to US influence on global trade.
