ASEAN ministers divided over Myanmar crisis in Jakarta talks

ASEAN foreign ministers convened in Jakarta to discuss the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. The talks were overshadowed by disagreements over how to engage with the nation's ruling junta, which seized power two years ago. Myanmar's political turmoil has led to bloodshed and intense violence, deepening regional discord. The regional bloc has struggled to establish a unified stance, a fact highlighted by a draft joint communique where Myanmar's section remained blank. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected to join the discussions later in the week, focusing on China's aggressive position in the South China Sea. Despite these challenges, ASEAN members are exerting additional efforts to resolve the Myanmar issue before the leaders' summit in September.
