Malaysia-Thailand border trade up 30.26% in 2021

The reopening of all nine checkpoints along the borders of Malaysia and Thailand has resulted in a 30.26% increase in border trade of both countries to THB627.7bn (USD18.9bn) last year, according to government data. Exports to Malaysia increased 42.62% to THB346.6bn while imports rose 18.44% to THB281.1bn, according to Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit. Thailand's overall border trade stood at THB1.71tr, a 30.03% year-on-year rise. For this year, Thailand's cross-border trade is expected to expand between 5% and 7% to THB1.08tr and THB1.1tr. Among others, the newly-opened high-speed rail connecting China and Laos is also expected to facilitate the transport of Thai goods this year.
